snooze button

•Saturday, 28 February 2009 • Leave a Comment

I need a snooze button installed behind my left ear. Lack of sleep as of late is not helping me function at work, so I need this type of button to press discretely and put everything on hold whilst I catch up on some shut-eye. Sounds dreamy …

Actually, I need a lot of buttons, not just snooze buttons – such as rewind, fast forward, replay, stop, pause, etc. But more on those another day.

Must. Stay. Awake.

Disclaimer: Coffee is not an option.

motorcycle diaries, part the second (plus a little Mardi Gras thrown in)

Last night, I watched Get Smart. Played ten-pin and tennis on a Wii. Played a few rounds of ‘cut-throat’ billards. Chanced upon a long-lost friend, Elizabeth. Got slightly lost with Jeremiah on his motorbike/cycle. Laughed a lot, and had such fun. Stayed up til 4.00 AM, got up at 5.30 AM. So far, so good. All is well, and I can’t get this stupid smile off my face. It’s been a lovely week thus far, and it’s only Tuesday morning :)

With that little synopsis of yesterday evening, onward to today: HAPPY MARDI GRAS, my dears! Fresh gumbo and king cake and LOTS of beads tonight! ;)

Eugenio Merino

There are a few times when I can’t help but think that Eugenio is a blerry genius. But those times are far and few between. In most cases, I would much prefer to slap him.

Here are some of those ‘few times’:

motorcycle diaries

So a lovely fellow named Jeremiah took me for a spin on his motorcycle (he corrected my ‘motorbike’) last night – grand fun, to say the least! His question before I got on the bike was ‘Are you fairly conservative, or are you more of a …’

He didn’t need to ask if I was a risk-taker, because I hopped on the motorcycle with the biggest grin on my face. Apparently pocket-sized women don’t normally take well to riding motorcycles. Hmm.

However, I misunderstood the question and answered, ‘I am rather liberal …’ (Way to go, Ciera. And yes, I do think/write in the third person sometimes.) He just laughed and explained what he meant later that night.

I looked quite all right before this excursion, but at the end of the evening, I ended up looking like I belonged in a police mug-shot photo (messy hair, tired eyes, and very chapped lips):

motorbike hair

Ja. I know. Belongs on a wall, doesn’t it?

Meh. All I can think, is poor Jeremiah – bless him. However, regardless of how I looked afterwards, I truly had a fantastic time – hopefully we can do that again soon!

anti-Valentine

I already love following Meg Pickard’s work/life on her blog … and now her anti-Valentines (est. 2001) are also on my list of ’stuff I like’ :) Too funny.

Happy Heart Day to everyone – and to my friends, family and other favourite people, my love to each of you (and quite sincerely, rest assured) ~ Cxx

Don Juanita

•Friday, 13 February 2009 • Leave a Comment

Earlier today I had to call a client named Juan – I called the phone number, and someone with a rather deep-toned semi-androgynous voice answered.

‘Hello … um, is this … Juan?’ I timidly said.

My voice cracked on saying the name, I was so worried I’d make the ultimate work faux pas – mistaking a client for the wrong gender. For some reason, few people ever take such an innocent mistake light-heartedly.

‘Uhhh – no,’ the slightly-effeminate Don LaFontaine-esque voice responded, ‘this is Juan’s wife.’

With that fear realised, and the customer audibly irritated, what do you think my impulsive reaction was? To practically shout ‘Juanita’ into the phone in an attempt to cover up my mistake. Ja, I know: bad.

Not surprisingly, the woman hung up on me.

Ohmyword … when does it end?

have you seen my coconuts?

•Thursday, 12 February 2009 • Leave a Comment

I had a rather memorable SMS exchange last night …

Amy:
You left your coconuts here

[5 minutes later]
me:
Oh dear! Can you please put them in the fridge? I can pick them up tomorrow, if that’s all right … ?

[0.000087 seconds later]
Amy:
Yeah that’s fine just call beforehand

[5 minutes later]
me:
Will do :) Thank you, hon!

Explanation: I had gone to visit Amy and her baby yesterday afternoon, and we took a trip over to Lee Lee’s Oriental Marketplace. I found that Lee Lee’s had young Thai coconuts for a lower cost than any place I had seen in California – two for a dollar! HEAVEN :) Sadly, although they did have some South African food on their shelves, no rooibos or peri-peri sauce. Anyway, I bought two of the coconuts, and after that little excursion, Amy and I (and the baby) went to have a belated lunch at an Ethiopian restaurant called Cafe Lalibella. Amy had not had Ethiopian food before, so I ordered some meat for her and then some vegetarian fare to share. We had a lot of fun, but had to head back to her house earlier than expected … where I accidentally left my two coconuts in her kitchen. She didn’t discover them there til a few hours later.

I went to pick up the coconuts today, and just drank the water from one. Currently eating the coconut meat now now – yum!

So if I ever happen to ask you, ‘Have you seen my coconuts?’ … please don’t be offended or alarmed.

PS: I am not as talented at composing SMS messages as most of my peers. My deepest condolences.

The current economic climate across the globe is disheartening, and I have fears for both myself and those that I know, about losing sources of income, losing homes, etc. But it’s interesting to see some people carry on through the rough times with a smile – when it just clicks for them, when they realise what doesn’t matter … and more importantly, what does. That’s what I consider inspiring.

Another example? This bloke …

NOTE: I do not support Starbucks nor their company practices. BUT I do support people finding themselves and finding happiness. Michael Gates Gill didn’t pursue work or happiness at the intentional expense of others. So there really is no need to raise the ol’ Starbucks debate yet again, dears
